France | Corsica, Rotondo Massif
Around Lac du Nino on the Plateau de Camputile, 1,700 metres up in Corsica's Rotondo Massif, the ground holds water in ways that take centuries to understand. As the glacial lake filled with peat, flat bog meadows formed along its edges. Snowmelt cuts through the soft ground, linking pool to pool through narrow channels. The Corsicans call them pozzi - small wells.
This is the most dramatic image of the series. Raking light throws the edges of each pool into sharp relief, and the dark water reads almost like craters on a lunar surface. Ancient, precise, and quietly unsettling. It is a landscape that only reveals itself from the air.
